Unit 2 - Lexis

This unit was very useful for me because as a learner I have studied the rules, grammar structures, etc. but it was difficult for me to give a definition or concept of a specific term.  In this unit I could clarify many of them such as collocation, chunks, etc. sometimes I used to mix the definitions of slangs and idioms but with the practice tasks and some extra information it was cleared. When teaching I am sure students must learn useful expressions, not that difficult like chunks, which will ease the process of learning a language. Another way to ease this learning process can be explaining the words´ relationships, such as synonyms and antonyms. Explaining them that words can come from the same word family, which may change the part of speech but the meaning may be very similar. I think that teaching structures and rules is not enough but we need to explain them and compare what we teach with their mother tongue to analyze the differences and similarities.

An interesting explanation with examples here:

  1. I agree with you because lexis is not easy to learn or explain and it will need a lot of practice in order to acquired knowledge. I also consider the video a good idea because we as future teachers need to be ready with extra materials that will be helpful for students.

  2. The video you put as example is really useful because it helps to clarify with examples what lexis is.
